The participation of women and girls in sports has blossomed since 1972 when one in 27 people were women who participated in sports, and today it's one in three. Yet, Laura Pappano notes, the news is not all good--it is still not socially and culturally acceptable for women to play sports. Pappano, writer-in-residence for the ÆÞÓÑÉçÇø, discusses the barriers that women face when playing sports, and what individuals and communities can do to help generate even more change for women in sports.
