Kathryn A. Wheeler, Ed.D. (Katie) is a Research Associate at the National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST), focusing on quality improvement and programs designed to empower girls.
Dr. Wheeler first joined NIOST in the 1990s, contributing to the development of a program quality assessment for out-of-school time programs. She then took a hiatus to serve as the Founding Executive Director of the Girls’ Coalition of Greater Boston, facilitating professional development, networking, and advocacy opportunities for adults working with and on behalf of girls. She later served as Editor of Teen Voices, a magazine by, for, and about adolescent girls.
Wheeler returned to NIOST in 2016. Projects since then have included: (1) observing programs with Boston Afterschool & Beyond; (2) coaching afterschool programs in Greater Boston and Venango County, PA; (3) investigating the impact of STEM programs targeting girls; (4) promoting literacy development through easy-to-implement activities; (5) researching the state of girls and young women in Massachusetts; and (6) co-facilitating the National Afterschool Matters (NASM) Fellowship Program for youth-serving practitioners.
Katie earned her Doctorate and Master’s in Developmental Psychology from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Pitzer College. She is active in the Anna B. Stearns Charitable Foundation and is the proud mother of three young adults.
