This paper discusses the findings of a 1991 study conducted in New York State in which parents of children with disabilities were questioned about the arrangements they had made for the care and education of their children. The study's sample, drawn from urban, rural, and suburban areas of New York state, verified that mothers of young children with special needs were not able to enter the work force at rates comparable to mothers of more typically developing children.
